Margaret T. Bernades passed peacefully on October 4, 2025 at Garden Isle Health Care Center at the age of 84. She was born on January 7, 1941, in Lihue, Kaua’i.
She was a proud member of Kapa’a High School Class of 1959. She started her early years working at the Hawaiian Cannery, Coco Palms Hotel, Olympic Cafe, Pop’s Restaurant, Kaua’i Sands Restaurant, Higashi Store, & Tammy’s Okazuya. As her grandchildren became of school age, she became involved serving the community as a school bus driver with Sanchez Bus Company in the early 80’s- 90’s. She was also a long time employee of Kojima Store in Kapa’a and her journey close to retirement led her to finishing her working years at Walmart.
It is easy to say she loved being out and about in the community staying busy and will fondly be remembered for living her life as a hardworking mom, loving grandmother and dedicated employee, who always enjoying a casual conversation investigating the latest happenings of anyone she came across while working.
She was preceded in death by her parents Joseph Texeira and Alice Henriques, brothers Paul and Robert Texeira and sister Alice (aka Joni) Texeira. Sisters in law Helen (Pete) Batangan, Gene Trent and brother in law Dickie Bernades and father of her children Jose Bernades Sr.
She is survived by daughter Michel
(Ed) Cummings, sons Jose Jr. (Renee) Bernades and Bryan (Rebekkah) Bernades, hanai sister Sweetie Lopez, sister in law Makiko Texeira, brother in law Larry (Julie) Bernades, sister in law Trinie Bernades and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held on January 10, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. at the beach fronting Kapa’a Neighborhood Center with a lunch @ the Cummings Residence in Anahola, Kaua’i to follow.
