“God gives comfort to those who comfort others.”
Shane K. Kaneapua gave his final “Aloha” to our world on August 8, 2025, leaving behind 57 years of memories, love and kindness. Throughout his life, Shane, lived by his own rules and made the outside world his home: carefree and without reservation. He was a beloved father, uncle, son and brother.
Born on December 23, 1967, in Honolulu to parents, Alberna H. Kaneapua (Oahu) and Oliwa B. Kamala (Kauai). Shane was immediately the adoration of the entire family. Later in life, he would become the big brother to 3 younger siblings.
Though Shane faced many personal challenges in his life, he carried inside of him a wealth that could never be measured – his love and compassion for others and his love for art. With a pencil, scrap of paper, or a splash of color, he could turn any object into a work of art. In addition, he was also known for his affection of cartoons, superheroes and black belt theater.
Despite having little, Shane gave freely. His artistic creations often found their way into the hands of strangers, friends, lost souls and other travelers – small tokens meant to provide comfort and happiness to others. For these reasons, he will always be remembered – not for what he lacked – but for the abundance of heart he carried everywhere he went.
He danced every dance and sang every song as if he was performing for thousands. He took more chances in a day than most take in a lifetime.
Shane is survived by his precious son, Joseph Bernard Kaneapua, as well as: Nicole Kaneapua (sister); Connie E. L. Emerson (sister) and many other loving family members. He is also survived by friends from all walks of life who became his chosen family and by the countless others he touched with his art and spiritual kindness. He was preceded in death by his mother, father and brother, Alted K. Emerson.
In honor of our brother, Shane, the family asks that you take a moment to reflect on these thoughts:
We don’t get to choose the struggles we are born into, but we do get to choose how we show up for one another. Somewhere tonight, someone will go to sleep hungry. Someone else will have to walk miles because they have no home to return to. And somewhere, a person who has almost nothing will still share what little they have – just because they know what it’s like to go without.
Knowing this, please live like our brother and make a difference in this world and truly LIVE ALOHA!
A Celebration of Life will be held on a later date.
