Welf Zoller, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 29, 2026, in Princeville, Hawaiʻi with his wife and daughter by his side. He was 83 years old.
Born on July 13, 1942, in Berlin, Germany, Welf grew up in a country rebuilding itself—an experience that shaped his deep sense of resilience, discipline, and craftsmanship. He pursued higher education at the Technical University of Munich, where he earned a PhD in Chemistry, following his father’s footsteps.
In 1976, Welf came to Kauaʻi, a place that would become his lifelong home. Though academically trained as a scientist, he ultimately followed his passion for working with his hands, becoming a highly skilled finish carpenter and builder. Known for his precision, creativity, and uncompromising standards, his work reflected both the analytical mind of a chemist and the soul of an artisan, leaving behind spaces crafted with care and beauty.
Welf embraced island life fully and found great joy in the ocean and in connecting with others. A devoted surfer, he rose early each morning to catch the sunrise and surf Waikoko’s, a place he loved for it beauty and long lefts.
Welf lived his life guided by faith, humility, and kindness as a devout Christian. His steadfast belief shaped his values and relationships and was a source of comfort and guidance to his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Loutoa; his daughter, Maile Wilson, and her husband, Chad; and his cherished grandchildren, Pierce and Gage, who brought him immense pride and joy. He is also lovingly remembered by his best friends who brought him to the island, Shawn de Mille and Bruce Luxton.
A celebration of life will be held in June at Kapaa Missionary Church, followed by a paddle-out send off at Waikokos. Details will be shared with family and friends closer to the date.
Kauai Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
